Drained head

It's been a long time since my head felt this drained. Did another one of our presentations and implementation meetings today (not travelling this week, instead they came here). About an hour or so after we had finished I could just tell how my brain got drained and replaced with marshmallow fluff. A classic symptom of having been a bit nervous and then when things are over and done with you relax and there goes the capacity to think straight.

Cure? Watch some nonsense TV and go to bed early. Probably even fall asleep in front of the TV if I know myself right.

Happy 4th anniversary!

Yesterday 4 years ago I wrote my first blog post and I'm still at it. About 1100 posts later. Wow! Who would have thought that?! Philip, who told me start blogging maybe...

I may not write every day as I used to but it's till nice to write about every day stuff and good or not so good things in life on a regular basis.

Here's to another year!

Streets of London

The London lover in me heard Streets of London on the radio this morning. Apparently a quite famous song from the 1960’s by singer-songwriter Ralph McTell which I’ve never heard about before. A bit embarrassing…

Both the music and lyrics was fabulous and I especially fell in love with the line – "Let me take you by the hand and lead you through the streets of London"

Have you seen the old man
In the closed-down market
Kicking up the paper,
with his worn out shoes?
In his eyes you see no pride
And held loosely at his side
Yesterday's paper telling yesterday's news

So how can you tell me you're lonely,
And say for you that the sun don't shine?
Let me take you by the hand and lead you through the streets of London
I'll show you something to make you change your mind

Have you seen the old girl
Who walks the streets of London
Dirt in her hair and her clothes in rags?
She's no time for talking,
She just keeps right on walking
Carrying her home in two carrier bags.

So how can you tell me you're lonely,
And say for you that the sun don't shine?
Let me take you by the hand and lead you through the streets of London
I'll show you something to make you change your mind

In the all night cafe
At a quarter past eleven,
Same old man is sitting there on his own
Looking at the world
Over the rim of his tea-cup,
Each tea last an hour
Then he wanders home alone

So how can you tell me you're lonely,
And say for you that the sun don't shine?
Let me take you by the hand and lead you through the streets of London
I'll show you something to make you change your mind

And have you seen the old man
Outside the seaman's mission
Memory fading with
The medal ribbons that he wears.
In our winter city,
The rain cries a little pity
For one more forgotten hero
And a world that doesn't care

So how can you tell me you're lonely,
And say for you that the sun don't shine?
Let me take you by the hand and lead you through the streets of London
I'll show you something to make you change your mind

To Poland

I'm off to Poland tomorrow afternoon for a meeting and presentation of one of the projects I've been driving for the last couple of months. Poland is the first stop of our road show which will go on until late April. Getting tired just thinking about it... I don't need to to do the UK and Ireland this time which is rather nice, but still being an Anglophile I love going there regardless of reason.

The last time I was in Poland was two years ago and I remember how impressed I was over how "westernised" the country was. At least the northern part where I went. Growing up during the 70's and 80's my view of eastern Europe is very tinted. Dull, boring and grey which Gdansk and Gdynia absolutely showed no proof of at all. Let's hope I feel the same way this time.

Sinusitis and bronchitis

My cold from last week never really went away so on Friday I decided to visit the doctor. I had a feeling I might have sinusitis and needed some antibiotics, so when the doctor which looked a lot like an older Dr Ross with salt and pepper hair, told me that yes you have sinusitis but you also have bronchitis I got very surprised. How the heck did I manage that? Not that I didn't have the symptoms like heavy cough, shortness of breath and wheezing but comes with a cold, right? Apparently not... He also took my temperature and told me that he was very surprised I was still standing. Hm, what else is there to do?!

Armed with three different prescriptions I went to closet chemist's where the pharmacist looked at the prescriptions and then at me saying - You must be real ill, this is quite some medicine the doctor has prescribed. Two sorts of pills and codeine cough syrup.

Finally at home again I took the pills and cough syrup and fell asleep. Woke up for a while and had some frozen pizza and fell asleep again on the sofa. By 9 in the evening I decided to go to bed and woke up at 8 yesterday morning. I spent most of yesterday reading, watching movies and sleeping some more. This morning I woke up at 7 and felt quite well. I can breath without wheezing, sinuses and nose aren't stuffed and cough is almost gone. Yeah! I still have to eat the full course of pills until Thursday, but that really doesn't t matter as long as I'm getting better and I am. Yeah again! It's those little things that really counts...

The world's sexiest cities

Whad'ya know, apparently cites can be sexy. Here's a list from Times Online that supposedly will put you in the mood

1. Rome
Frothing fountains, cobbled piazzas and enough energy to launch a rocket, Rome is up there among Europe’s raunchiest cities

2. Bath
Don’t be fooled by the demure façades. Behind closed doors, this city is positively steamy, thanks to those rampant Romans and the city’s celebrated romantic, Jane Austen

3. Havana
Take pastel walls, vintage vehicles and colonial buildings, add a salsa soundtrack and garnish with a beam of golden sun, and you have Havana, the Caribbean at its most sizzling

4.London
For every spot on the tourist’s tick-list, there’s a trad experience with a twist – dress up, stay out late and explore the capital’s secret, saucy side

5. New York
Sex and the city – the two words now belong together famously, and where else could we be referring to? The Big Apple exudes sex like steam from a Manhattan manhole cover. Feeling in the mood? Of course you are…

6. Berlin
Europe’s naughtiest city breaks all the rules – smoking in clubs, staying up round the clock, dancing the night away semi-naked. Where better for an illicit thrill (and plenty of shared secrets to take home)?

7. Paris
Eiffel Tower clinches, candlelit bistros and scantily clad showgirls – Paris was made for lovers. Time to unleash your inner va-va-voom

8. St Petersburg
In winter, lovers huddle together, ducking in and out of vodka bars to stay warm. In summer, clothes come off and café chairs come out, turning the city into one flesh-heavy alfresco restaurant. St P is sexy – 24/7

9. Seville
Late nights, flamenco beats, Moorish palaces and sultry heat: Seville has a stunningly sexy side – and there’s not a polka dot in sight

10. Tangier
Intense and edgy, with a bit of a reputation, Tangier is Morocco’s spiciest city. The once-hedonistic playground of writers, exiles and spies still has plenty of heat to get the pulse racing

11. Stockholm
Know the moment you realise you’ve got the hots for someone you’ve just been friends with for a while? Well, that’s Stockholm: ordered on the surface, a bit of a goer underneath

12. Istanbul
The former capital of the Ottoman sultans looks timewarped, with its exotic, silhouetted mosques, but its bars, clubs and fashion restaurants brim with 21st-century sex appeal…

Well, I can agree on Rome, Paris and Havana (never been there but one can imagine all the sun and rum...), but St Petersburg and Tangier? I spent one day in Tangier and I all wanted to do was to leave. Filthy, dirty and guides who couldn't take a no for an answer. St Petersburg, no way. Russia will never be sexy for me no matter how much vodka you drink.

Sneezing Sunday

I've been so proud and happy that I've managed to stay well for a long time while people around me have had stomach bugs, flues and colds. The last time I was ill was January 2009 right after New Year's so I guess I had it coming. Started with a little bit of sore throat on Thursday, some cough on Friday and yesterday more coughing and tight chest. Then right before going to bed last night it was time for fever and more coughing. Woke up this morning with a runny nose as well. So today is sneezing and coughing Sunday. Isn't life just wonderful?

How to open a wine bottle

A couple of ways to open a bottle of wine. Not sure I'm going to try the last one. I love my syrah too much to risk a bottle like this.

This one takes the prize

A friend in Oklahoma sent me this story about a woman in Florida who got arrested for reckless driving and causing an accident. Guess what she was doing while driving? Shaving bikini area.
Troopers told the reporter that 37-year-old Megan Mariah Barnes was meeting her boyfriend in Key West and wanted to be properly groomed for the visit.

So during the drive, she decided to shave.

Her ex-husband, who was in the passenger's seat, took the wheel while she focused on other areas, according to the report.
Really, how stupid can people be? This lady really takes the prize.

Sunny Sunday

If last Sunday was slacker Sunday today has been sunny Sunday. Beaming from a clear blue sky and making the temperature go all the way up to +3. The nicest day so far this year and hopefully this means that the very looong winter we've been having is finally starting to give in.

I've been inside all day unfortunately, but thanks to my big windows, which I hate when it's cold outside, my flat has been warm, cosy and very sunny. With the sun so warm and comforting my sofa was the perfect for curling up and bask in the sun. Just like a cat. One of my favourite things to do during the spring and autumn when the sun isn't to hot. Soon enough it will be time to close the blinds because the sun gets too hot and burns everything. But until then happy days on the sofa.

A day in the Internet

After using the Internet for 15 years. (I can't believe it's been that many years. I'm old...) First at university and now the last 12 years working with it I find these facts amazing. The Internet has become a monster which is good and bad in many, many ways.

Cookbooks

Besides loving to cook, eat and drink I also love cookbooks. Sort of comes naturally I guess. And I also love books and reading so cookbooks are really three fabulous things in one (almost like a Kinder egg).

The annual book sale is going on here in Sweden and on Friday I decided to go and see if I could find any bargains. The sale used to be a huge thing but with all the online bookshops it has unfortunately become an event where the bookshops try to get rid of unsold books. Expensive books like coffee-table-books and glossy cookbooks can still be found though and that have become the only thing I try to buy.

This year I found two books about wine and two cookbooks. One of the cookbooks was Jamie Oliver's
Cook your way to the good life. It's not only a cookbook but also a book about growing your own vegetables and eating what's in season. I'm a big fan of Jamie Oliver and really admires his passion for food and getting people to understand the importance of healthy and nutritious food.

I read the book from cover to cover last night in bed. Drooling over the recipes and dreaming about having my own vegetable patch. Not like it's going to happen... But I actually think I will try having tomatoes on my balcony this summer. That place is so sunny and warm, so tomatoes would love it there.

Tonight I'm going to read one of the wine books and dream about grapes and vineyards instead. Not too shabby either...
