May wines

Again I’m running late with last month’s wines. In May some warmer weather finally arrived, hence a lot of rosé wines, but my best and fondest memory from May is that I got to try Penfolds Grange 1991. Definitely an evening to remember along with trying several other labels from Penfolds luxury range.

Delheim Pinotage Rosé 2011
I’m old school when it comes to rosé wines. Too sweet and sticky and I will just pour it out. I’ve never tired a pinotage rosé before so when I saw the bottle had to buy. Boy was I disappointed…Radiant pink colour. On the nose strawberry and raspberry aromas. On the palate dry, crisp taste with hints of gummy bears, yellow plums and grapefruit.

Domaene Gobelsburg Rosé 2011
At the same time as I hadn’t heard about pinotage rosé I had never heard about rose wine from Austria. Needless to say I had to try it and it was a hit. Pale pink colour. On the nose strawberry, passion fruit blood orange and hints of herbs. On the palate strawberry, raspberry, passion fruits and herbs.

Domaine de Collavery 2010
A "real" rosé wine from Provence. One sip and I’m back at the French Rivera. Orange, salmon pink colour. On the nose redcurrant, oranges and some herbs. On the palate redcurrants, vanilla, oranges, herbs and raspberry

The Jump Stump White 2008
An old favourite that never lets you down. Yellow colour. On the nose apple and tropical fruits such as pomegranate. On the palate again tropical fruits, peach and some hints of rose petal. Long finish.

Penfolds Thomas Hyland Chardonnay 2011
Another Aussie that never lets you down. Light straw in colour. On the nose peach and citrus fruits along with some oak. On the palate stonefruit, mineralty, citrus fruits and sublime hints of oak.

Palmer Blanc de Blancs 2006
Palmer has somehow become our own the house champagne lately, which I can’t say is a problem... Light yellow colour. On the nose floral aromas such as white flowers and honeysuckle together with almond. On the palate green apples, grapefruite and toasted notes of mocha.

Winkl Sauvignon 2011
During spring everybody was talking about Winkl in Sweden, and of course I had to give it a try as well. Pale yellow colour with greenish tints. On the nose with scents of summer flowers, sage and dried pineapple. On the palate grapefruit, coriander and hints of honey

Le Busche 2007
White Italian wines have for the last couple of years had a bit of revival in Sweden (along with red Italian winesI presume). The very tasteful Verdicchio grape is cool again. Golden yellow colour with greenish tints. On the nose wild flowers, vanilla, exotic fruit and some light spice. On the palate soft and velvety with aromatic and mineral notes.

Penfolds Yattarna 1999
The first wine of a magical evening and tasting at the wine cellar. On the colour pale straw with brilliant green hues. On the nose golden apples, mago and hints of grapefruit. Also some cinnamon and oak. On the palate lime, grapefruit, citrus and pear. Rich texture.

Penfolds Bin 389 2001
Deep red colour. On the nose blackcurrant pastille, mulberry, liquorice and aniseed. On the palate blackcurrant mulberry, liquorice and mocha.

Penfolds Kalimna Bin 28 2001
Medium deep red colour. On the nose plum, blackberry, dark cherry and cedar aromas. On the palate richly concentrated mocha, plum, graphite flavours ending with spicy notes.

Penfolds RWT Shiraz 1998
Dense crimson red colour. On the nose Christmas pudding fruits, prune, liquorice and hints of oak. On the palate blueberry, chocolate and praline flavours. Very long flavour and texture.

Penfolds Bin 707 1996
Deep garnet red colour. On the nose lots of cassis, berry, violet and cedar oak in the background. On the palate berried fruits, blackcurrant and anise together with oak.

Penfolds Grange 1991
Loving Aussie wine and being a big fan of Penfolds tasting Grange has of course been a dream for quite a while. A couple of times I’ve even looked at the bottle at Heathrow’s T3, but put it back. Well, the next time I won’t. I don’t ever think I will taste a wine like Grange again (Well maybe another bottle of Grange). It was pure perfection and you couldn’t find anything wrong with it. Dark, dense, red purple colour. On the nose ripe berry spice, tobacco, mocha, green tea and hints of oak. On the palate fruit flavours with spicy, rich berry fruit and earthy characters. Ripe tannins that finish with an excellent length.

Irony Pinot Noir 2010
Californian and Sonoma wine at its best. Red colour with hints of blue. On the nose plenty of cherry and strawberry with some clove and savage. On the palate cherry, some rhubarbs, liquorice and berry jam. Firm tannins and crisp acidity makes a very smooth finish.

Castello Banfi Rosso di Montalcino 2006
Yet another Italian red that got me real impressed. Intese ruby red colour with violet refelctions. On the nose violet, cherry and plum. On the palate plenty of fresh fruit such as cherry, plums and hints of violets. Long fininsh.

Leclaire-Gaspard Grande Réserve Brut
Celebrating the end of a project and job well done at work. Yellow colour. On the nose apples, biscuit and hints of nuts. On the palate citrus fruits, toast, nuts and some slight hints of chocolate.

Kim Crawford Sauvignon Blanc 2008
Warm weather and a glass of chilled Kiwi Sauvignon Blanc, it can’t get more summer than that. Pale green colour. On the nose nettles, passion fruit, stone fruit and grass. On the palate sweet tropical fruits, citrus and hints of blackcurrant

Launois Blanc de Blancs Brut Cuvée Reservée
Another Friday another chance to try a new label of champagne. Light yellow colour. On the nose flowers, fitrus fruits, apple and some biscuit. On the palate orange, grapefruit, biscuits and hints of chocolate.

Bosquet des Papes Cuvée Tradition 2009
Wines from Côtes du Rhône, what is there not to love? Deep red colour with blues hues. On the nose spices, oak, lavender, plum, raspberry, dried herbs, chocolate and some liquorice. On the palate lots of fruit, lavender, spice, plum and dried herbs
